Meziane Outlines the Future of Algeria’s Media sector

Communication Minister Mohamed Meziane presented Monday in Algiers the strategic guidelines for the future of Algeria’s media sector, during the fourth regional meeting of journalists and media professionals.

The event featured four workshops addressing: the new legal framework for the media sector and professional ethics, the state of print, broadcast, and digital press in the era of artificial intelligence and 5G, institutional communication’s role in promoting Algeria’s image, and the importance of continuous, specialized training for journalists.

Adapting to AI and New Technologies

In his opening speech, Meziane stressed the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and rapid technological change, calling on the national press to adapt while reaffirming the importance of ongoing, specialized training for media professionals.

The minister denounced disinformation campaigns targeting Algeria, urging the creation of a national media front to defend the country’s interests and confront destabilization attempts. He reaffirmed the government’s respect for press freedom, asserting that the executive has never interfered in editorial lines.

For a National Media Front

Meziane highlighted that Algeria is facing subtle and hostile campaigns aimed at disrupting its development and undermining public confidence. He called for a professional, responsible, and values-driven media response.

He also warned against unreliable online sources and advocated for fact-based journalism, noting the importance of distinguishing between facts and opinions and promoting constructive criticism over defamation.

Strengthening Content Quality and Local Media

The minister announced the drafting of a roadmap aimed at shifting Algeria’s media sector from a focus on quantity to one of quality, emphasizing the production of dense, reliable content adapted to the digital age and social media platforms.

Meziane further stressed the urgency of bridging the digital gap and modernizing infrastructure, citing new journalist training programs in emerging fields, particularly in digital writing and web journalism.

Prioritizing Proximity Media

Lastly, he emphasized proximity media as a strategic tool for addressing citizen concerns, protecting public opinion from misinformation, and reflecting daily life in communities. Meziane affirmed that fostering such localized journalism would support social cohesion and accurately convey the expectations and aspirations of Algerians.
