Algerian opera Revives Tchaikovsky

In a mesmerizing blend of cultures, the Boualem Bessaïh Opera of Algiers lit up Thursday night with a vibrant tribute to legendary Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Titled “Tchaikovsky: Music Beyond Borders,” the concert marked his 185th birth anniversary with stunning performances by world-class Russian artists.
Held under the Algerian-Russian cultural cooperation program, the evening drew a large and captivated audience, including diplomats and cultural figures. Acclaimed soloists and instrumentalists, including violinist Alexander Poltoratsky, cellist Rozalina Husseinzade, and pianist Daniil Borzenko, breathed life into Tchaikovsky’s most poetic works like “Nocturne” and “Melody.”
Opera stars from Russia and Algeria enchanted the crowd with timeless arias from Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, Carmen, La Bohème, and more. The night culminated in a joyful rendition of “Kalinka-Malinka” that had the audience swaying and applauding in unison.
