Oran, the Shadow Beneath the Flag

The final days leading up to Algeria’s independence on July 5, 1962, remain deeply etched in the memory of the moudjahidine condemned to death. In the prisons of the French colonial regime, a tense atmosphere reigned one filled with hope, anticipation, and the quiet joy of a long-awaited victory after years of suffering and sacrifice.

On that same day of liberation, the city was shaken by tragic violence that left hundreds dead and cast a long shadow over the national jubilation. For many, Oran became a symbol of both the price of freedom and the fragility of peace in the first hours of sovereignty.
