Algeria Rebukes French claims

On August 19, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in the Official Journal of the French Republic the suspension of the 2013 France-Algeria agreement that allowed holders of diplomatic and service passports to enter without a visa. France claimed that Algeria had stopped applying the agreement since May 11, 2025.
An Algerian Foreign Ministry source rejected this claim, calling it false. The source explained that it was actually France that first restricted entry for Algerian diplomatic and service passport holders back in February 2025.
According to the Algerian side, the first case of refusal happened on February 13, when an Algerian diplomat was denied entry to France. A second case followed on February 26. At that time, Algeria officially protested and asked France for explanations.
The source stressed that France was the first to break the agreement, and Algeria’s later measures were only a reciprocal response.
Finally, the Algerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the matter is now closed, since Algeria officially ended the 2013 visa exemption agreement on August 7, 2025.
