UN declares famine in Gaza : A humanitarian tragedy

On August 22, 2025, the United Nations officially declared famine in Gaza for the first time in the Middle East. According to the UN-backed report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), over half a million people in Gaza are facing catastrophic hunger, starvation, and death. The famine is expected to spread further to southern areas of Gaza in the upcoming weeks, worsening the crisis.
UN aid officials highlighted that this famine is not natural but entirely preventable. The chief of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, pointed to systematic obstruction by the Zionist authorities as the main cause blocking food aid from entering Gaza. Despite food being available at borders, aid is being stalled, leaving millions without basic nourishment.
The report also shows that Gaza’s local agriculture has been destroyed, fishing is banned, and the health system is collapsing. Malnutrition is rapidly increasing, especially among children and pregnant women, pushing many to the brink of death.
However, UN officials and humanitarian groups warn that this crisis is a direct result of policies by the Zionist administration, which restrict access to food and medical supplies, effectively using starvation as a weapon of war.
This famine marks a grave failure of humanity and a dire call for immediate action to allow full humanitarian access to Gaza and stop further loss of life.
