Widening Air routing for a closer Africa

Africa’s aviation sector is a sleeping giant, with vast potential to boost trade, tourism, and job creation. Despite being home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, the continent struggles with poor connectivity and fragmented air travel networks.

For instance, a flight of 3,700 miles apart, often requires a layover , even if both cities are in Africa. This lack of direct flights between major African hubs highlights a larger issue: Africa’s aviation sector is hindered by outdated bilateral agreements that restrict routes and airline competition.

The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) points out that one of the biggest challenges facing the continent’s aviation industry is market access. Existing policies limit airlines from freely operating between African cities, unlike the European Union’s open skies model, which allows air routing .These barriers not only drive up costs but also restrict the growth of intra-African travel. Currently, intra-continental flights make up only 21% of Africa’s routes, compared to Europe, where two-thirds of flights are within the continent.

However, there is hope. Initiatives like the ”Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM)” launched in 2018, are working to remove these barriers. To date, 38 African countries have signed on, and this has already led to the creation of over 100 new routes. More countries are easing visa restrictions, further facilitating travel. These steps could potentially lead to the creation of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic growth.

Countries like Ethiopia and Rwanda are leading the charge, investing heavily in both their airlines and aviation infrastructure. Ethiopian Airlines, the continent’s largest airline, is already planning a $10 billion airport expansion, while Rwanda is building a $2 billion hub to increase its connectivity.

The path forward is clear: removing restrictions, investing in infrastructure, and seeing aviation as a strategic enabler for economic growth will unlock immense opportunities for Africa. With the backing of regional agreements and international partnerships, Africa’s aviation sector has the potential to transform the continent, boosting economic integration and mobility for millions.
