Algeria’s water gets a mega boost

Sonatrach, through the Algerian Water Desalination Company, today signed contracts with several national firms to build seawater desalination plants in the regions of Chlef, Mostaganem, and Tlemcen. Each plant will have a daily production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters.

The signing ceremony was attended by State Minister and Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Water Resources, Tahar Derbal, and Sonatrach CEO, Noureddine Daoudi. Under the agreements, the National Petroleum Construction Company will oversee the Chlef plant, the Algerian Company for Industrial Projects (SARPI) will handle Mostaganem, and COSIDAR Pipelines will manage Tlemcen.

These projects are part of the first phase of the Second National Complementary Program, approved by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which plans six major seawater desalination stations nationwide, each with a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day. The initiative is expected to strengthen Algeria’s water security while supporting local industrial capabilities.
