Morroccan police : “Chabli” torture case ingnites international fury

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) and MENA Rights Group have filed a complaint with the UN Committee Against Torture over the death of Yassine Chabli, claiming he died from torture by Moroccan police.
Chabli, arrested on October 5, 2022, was beaten and left without medical care in a police station, where he was found dead the following day with clear signs of torture.
Despite evidence, Moroccan authorities have refused to classify the incident as torture, instead attributing his death to “self-inflicted injuries.” The case was initially considered torture but later downgraded to “violence” and “manslaughter.” Chabli’s family, seeking justice, has faced legal harassment, further fueling claims of a cover-up.
Both organizations argue this case is a test of Morocco’s commitment to international human rights obligations and have filed a new complaint, calling for the case to be reopened and properly classified as torture.
