Algeria takes lead in Maghreb social development

Algeria has topped the Maghreb in social development, ranking first regionally in the 2026 Social Progress Index with a score of 67.62 out of 100. Placed 79th worldwide among 171 countries, Algeria comes ahead of Tunisia and Morocco, confirming its lead beyond income-based measures.

The country’s strongest performance lies in basic social foundations. Algeria scores highly in access to electricity and food security, both rated at a perfect 100, alongside solid results in water, sanitation, and housing. These essentials give the country a clear edge in regional and African comparisons.

In terms of well-being, Algeria also stays ahead of its neighbors, supported by widespread mobile connectivity, though the index points to room for improvement in digital public services and healthcare quality. On opportunities, including advanced education and inclusion, the country ranks mid-range, signaling that future gains will depend on strengthening skills, mobility, and social inclusion.

Overall, the SPI 2026 paints a positive picture: a strong social base, regional leadership in the Maghreb, and a competitive standing in Africa, with the next challenge being to turn solid foundations into higher-quality services and broader opportunities.
