Algeria reaffirms support for peace in South Sudan

Algeria’s Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, took part on Wednesday and Thursday in Juba in a ministerial working visit of the African Union’s High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5), the Foreign Ministry said.

The visit falls within the AU’s support for the peace process in South Sudan and the follow-up of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, especially as the country approaches key milestones in its transitional process and its first elections since independence.

It also aims to prepare discussions on South Sudan ahead of the 39th Ordinary AU Summit scheduled for February 2026 in Addis Ababa.

The program included high-level meetings with President Salva Kiir, senior government officials, AU and UN missions, regional partners, diplomats, electoral bodies, and civil society representatives.

During his interventions, Chaib reaffirmed Algeria’s firm support for South Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, stressing that the full implementation of the revitalized peace agreement remains the best path toward national reconciliation and lasting stability.
