Algeria’s handball team heads to CAN 2026

The Algerian men’s handball team has flown to Kigali for the 27th African Nations Championship (CAN 2026), running from January 21–31.
Coach Salah Bouchekriou selected 18 players, split evenly between domestic league stars, led by Messaoud Berkous in his 10th CAN, and players competing abroad, including Abdi Ayoub (HC Nantes, France).
Algeria wrapped up preparation with a win in Slovenia (32-31 vs. Trimo Trebenje) and earlier friendlies against Kuwait, Georgia, and the Czech Republic.
Placed in Group A, Algeria opens against Nigeria (Jan 21), faces Rwanda (Jan 22), and closes the group stage vs. Zambia (Jan 24). The tournament also offers spots for the 2027 World Championship in Germany, a goal the Verts aim for after finishing as runners-up at CAN 2024.
