Gara Djebilet rail link powers Algeria’s mining ambitions

Algeria has inaugurated a new railway station at the Gara Djebilet iron ore site in Tindouf, marking a major step in the country’s integrated mining project aimed at developing one of the world’s largest iron deposits and strengthening rail infrastructure in the southwest.
The facility will play a strategic role in transporting iron ore from the mine to processing and export hubs via Béchar and Oran, supporting regional economic activity and development. The station is part of the 950-km western mining rail line linking Gara Djebilet to Béchar and the national rail network.
Built to modern technical standards, the station is designed to ensure efficient and regular loading and transport operations. Officials described the project as a key milestone in valorising Algeria’s mineral resources, with expected benefits including job creation, increased investment, improved mobility for local populations, and progress toward economic diversification and long-term development in the southern regions.
