Hammana Boukhari remembered in Oran

The Cinémathèque d’Oran hosted a screening of the documentary Hammana Boukhari… Philosopher of the Algerian Revolution, directed by Ahmed Ben Driss, in the presence of the family, academics, teachers, and students.

The Wilaya’s Director of Culture and Arts, representing the Minister, emphasized the symbolic importance of the tribute, highlighting Boukhari’s legacy as an intellectual whose life combined engagement, reflection, and scientific rigor. Having known him first as a teacher, she recalled the depth of his academic journey from Guemar to Zitouna in Tunis and Cairo which shaped a personality rooted in cultural heritage yet open to contemporary thought.

Boukhari, born in 1937, dedicated himself to the intellectual formation of students at the University of Oran, founding the city’s first philosophy department in 1983. His pedagogical style blended intellectual rigor with humor, fostering critical thinking. Author of Philosophie de la Révolution algérienne and works such as Méditations sur la vie et la religion (2012), his writings reflect a lifelong commitment to justice and cultural dialogue.

The event concluded with a public debate, underscoring the enduring relevance of Boukhari’s thought and the importance of preserving Algeria’s intellectual heritage.
