IMF applauds Algeria’s steps toward diversified growth

Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF, praised Algeria’s recent economic progress in an interview with APS, saying the country has built solid foundations and can speed up diversification if it continues its reform path.

She highlighted measures that simplify investment procedures, modernize administration and improve the business climate. Georgieva noted that growth has remained resilient after the pandemic, supported by public investment, easing inflation and major projects in digital, transport and energy infrastructure. She also pointed to a strong rise in non-hydrocarbon exports and a growing startup ecosystem driven by digital expansion.

While acknowledging ongoing challenges, she said Algeria has real potential to strengthen its role in regional value chains and could emerge as a regional energy hub, especially through renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, if reform and regional cooperation continue
