New party law aims to strengthen democracy in Algeria

The National People’s Assembly is debating a new political party law aimed at strengthening pluralism, transparency, and accountability. The law introduces stricter rules for party creation, internal governance, financing, and political ethics, including penalties for party-switching by elected officials.
It also encourages youth and women’s participation, allows parties to form alliances, and ensures their active role in public policy discussions. At the same time, it prohibits religious, regional, or foreign influence in political activity, aiming to build stronger, credible institutions and reinforce national stability.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described the reform as a “democratic step” and plans dialogue with political actors on shaping a broader “society project” once the law is passed.
