Algiers Great mosque ignites Ramadan war on drugs

Imagine walking into Algiers’ grand Great Mosque in Mohammadia last Wednesday evening, greeted not just by Ramadan’s spiritual glow, but by a beacon of hope against addiction.
Under the banner “Ramadan: A Chance to Break Free from Drugs,” the National Office for the Fight Against Drugs and Addiction (ONLCD) unveiled a new awareness and sensitization space to combat drug use and promote prevention.
Leading the inauguration was ONLCD Director General Tarek Kour, joined by representatives from the National Gendarmerie, National Security, Algerian Customs, civil society groups, and imams from mosques across the country. This initiative, Kour explained, stems from a coordinated national campaign with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments, the Ministry of Communication, and the Great Mosque’s administration.
The event buzzed with youth-focused talks, awareness pamphlets, and an open dialogue between citizens and imams on quitting drugs and seeking treatment. Mosque visitors warmly welcomed the move, seeing it as a vital shield for Algeria’s young people and communities.
