Cabinet meeting sets new policy direction

Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Sunday, reviewing recent government activity and outlining priorities including electoral reform, youth policy and preparations for Eid al-Adha.

The president called for further consultation with political parties on the proposed revision of the electoral law concerning constituencies and parliamentary seats, announcing the creation of a commission at the presidency to finalise the proposal.

Ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026, he also set a maximum price of 50,000 dinars for imported sheep and ordered strict monitoring of the import and sale process to prevent speculation and fraud.

The meeting also addressed the threat of locust swarms in southern regions, with the president instructing authorities to strengthen surveillance and use modern methods, including aerial pesticide spraying, to protect crops.

Youth issues were another key focus. President Tebboune called for stronger efforts to tackle unemployment, combat drug use among young people and expand sports activities in schools and universities, while urging the development of youth centres in communes across the country.

On environmental policy, he ordered the expansion of laboratories monitoring imported goods at ports and airports and called for faster wastewater treatment, stressing that environmental protection is now a central element of national security and economic policy.
