Drought-resisting trees widely planted in El Tarf

Since January, the wilaya of El Tarf has seen the planting of 12,513 drought-resistant fruit trees, according to the Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA).
These trees cover 41.71 hectares out of the campaign’s total target of 45.11 hectares, spreading across the communes of El Kala, Ben M’hidi, El Tarf, Bouteldja, Bouhadjar, and Drean. Amel Mansouri, head of the DSA’s organization and standardization office, highlighted that the initiative aims to support small-scale agricultural investors while promoting sustainable local production.
Backed by a budget of 23.365 million DA, the project focuses on species that thrive with minimal water, including almond, cherry, fig, pomegranate, walnut, pistachio, and plum trees. “We carefully selected varieties that can withstand water stress while contributing to the region’s agricultural growth,” Mansouri explained.
Set to be completed in the coming days, the campaign is part of broader efforts to encourage investment in agriculture and strengthen Algeria’s local food production. With a mix of innovation and sustainability, El Tarf is planting seeds literally and figuratively for a greener, more resilient future.
