Larbi Bouamrane : Chaâbi’s Rising Star

At just 20, Larbi Bouamrane Islam from Miliana has already made his mark on Algeria’s musical landscape. Crowned first prize at the 15th National Chaâbi Music Festival held from 9 to 12 March at the Palais de la Culture Moufdi Zakaria, he embodies a new generation of artists committed to preserving the nation’s rich traditions.
Originally trained in hawzi music at the “Dziria” association of Miliana, Larbi only recently ventured into chaâbi, encouraged by established performers. “Andalusian music associations are true schools,” he notes. “They teach not just music, but discipline, respect, and values, shaping both character and intellect.”
An accomplished mandolinist turned oud player, Larbi emphasises the link between andalusian music and chaâbi. While chaâbi is more popular and directly engages audiences, its roots lie in the complex, disciplined structures of Andalusian music, offering a foundation for any aspiring musician.
Reflecting on the festival, he adds: “It’s more than a competition it’s a celebration of our heritage. The masterclasses and interactions with seasoned maestros have been invaluable, guiding the younger generation to carry forward this treasured tradition.”
