Spain’s foreign minister explores Oran’s iconic fortress

Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, took a symbolic detour into history on Friday, visiting the legendary Santa Cruz Fort overlooking the coastal city of Oran.

Guided through the fortress’s corridors, Albares was introduced to centuries of layered history from Spanish and Ottoman rule to the colonial era all etched into the walls of this 16th-century landmark. Perched atop Mount Murdjadjo, the site offered him sweeping panoramic views of Oran’s bay, a reminder of the city’s enduring strategic and touristic appeal.

More than a simple visit, the stop highlighted the deep historical ties between Algeria and Spain, as Albares continues his official trip aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
