Ultimate Farewell to Liamine Zeroual

Algeria bid a final farewell on Monday to former president Liamine Zeroual, a man widely remembered for his humility and quiet strength, in a funeral that reflected the simplicity he upheld throughout his life.

A large and emotional crowd gathered in his hometown of Batna, where he was laid to rest following a national ceremony led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Senior officials, army generals, moudjahidine, and ordinary citizens stood side by side, united in grief.

Zeroual, who led Algeria through one of its most difficult periods between 1994 and 1999, was honored not only for his leadership but also for a lifetime of integrity and service a man whose legacy will be etched in Algeria’s history.

Beyond the official tributes, it was the deep, heartfelt reaction of Algerians, particularly in Batna and surrounding areas, that truly showed the simple and honorable way Zeroual treated people. “Algeria will miss him deeply, especially us,” one neighbor said. “He greeted me every morning with a smile.”

In that moment, a nation mourned not just a former president, but a man who remained, above all, one of its own.
