Vladimir Petković: Austria will be our main rival for second place in the group

Austria identified as Algeria’s main challenger

The national team coach, Vladimir Petković, said on Wednesday in Algiers that Austria will be Algeria’s main competitor for second place in Group J during the final phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026 in Mexico, Canada and the United States.

Argentina favored for top spot

“Assuming that, as the reigning world champion, the Argentina national football team will be favored to finish first in Group J, Austria, which has made significant progress, will be our main rival for the second qualifying spot for the next round,” he said during a press conference held at the Mohamed-Sellah hall of Nelson-Mandela Stadium in Baraki.

Jordan also a serious contender

However, Petković did not overlook the fourth team in Group J, namely the Jordan national football team, considering that it also represents a serious competitor that must be approached with caution.

“Jordan has improved considerably in recent years, and the level it has reached allows it to also aim for qualification to the second round. This makes it another serious rival for us, one that we must take seriously to avoid any unpleasant surprises,” he warned.

High-profile friendlies for preparation

To prepare for the World Cup finals, the national team will play three friendly matches against renowned opponents, including the Uruguay national football team and the Netherlands national football team.

A 27-player squad with new faces

Petković has called up a squad of 27 players, including six newcomers, for a training camp to be held from March 23 to 31 in Italy.

“I would like to clarify that this list is not final for the World Cup finals. In addition to the 27 players called up for the upcoming training camp, another 15 players are currently on the extended list and can still hope to make it to the World Cup,” he said.

A broader pool of players under consideration

Petković explained that the performance of these players is well known and recognized, and that they remain available to the national team, allowing him to call on them whenever necessary.

Building for the future

Asked about the inclusion of the six new players, the national coach said it is part of his strategy to build the future of the national team and to give these players the opportunity to integrate into the group ahead of upcoming competitions.

“This approach, which we have adopted since taking charge of the national team, will also allow us to cope with the absence of certain players due to injury or lack of playing time. We will give every player capable of adding value to the team a chance, and allow players to confirm their talent,” the national team coach emphasized.
