Algeria’s Blouza weaves its way to UNESCO

In a celebration of memory, elegance, and identity, Malika Bendouda led a ceremony in Algiers to submit Algeria’s latest nominations to UNESCO with the iconic blouza at the heart of it.
More than just a garment, the blouse of western Algeria tells a story stitched by generations of women of skill, pride, and quiet artistry. Its intricate embroidery and timeless charm carry the spirit of a region where tradition meets grace.
Alongside it, Algeria also put forward meddahat songs echoes of spiritual devotion passed down through women’s voices and traditional board games like khrebga and mancala, symbols of shared moments and social bonds.
Together, these elements form a living heritage one that Algeria is determined to preserve, celebrate, and share with the world.
