Saint Augustine’s city awaits Pontifal Visit

In a moment that blends history, culture, and faith, Algeria is preparing to welcome a rare and symbolic visit from the Vatican one that is already shining a spotlight on the country’s rich heritage.
Minister of Culture and the Arts Malika Bendouda oversaw the reopening of the museum at the archaeological site of Hippone Archaeological Site and toured the iconic Basilique Saint-Augustin on Thursday, as part of preparations for the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV.
Expected in Annaba between the 13th and 15th of this month, the visit at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will highlight two of the city’s most meaningful landmarks.
Bendouda announced plans to expand the Hippone museum and introduce a modern center dedicated to Saint Augustine, bringing new life to a site deeply rooted in history. She also approved the revival of the restoration project for the Hafsid citadel, a classified national heritage site with a layered past stretching from medieval times to the struggle for independence.
During her visit, the minister called for deeper research in partnership with the University of Annaba and encouraged local artists and creators to bring forward bold, innovative cultural projects, reaffirming the state’s support for the arts.
