Walid takes part in the tech-driven agriculture FAO summit

Representing Algeria at the 34th FAO Regional Conference for Africa, Minister of Agriculture Yassine Walid delivered a powerful roadmap for continental food sovereignty, emphasizing that Africa’s vast natural resources must finally be met with urgent, coordinated investment.

Addressing a high-level ministerial roundtable, the Minister highlighted the stark contrast between the continent’s agricultural potential and the persistent reality of malnutrition, calling for a radical shift toward innovation and structural funding. He argued that transforming agrifood systems is no longer a distant ambition but a mechanical necessity, requiring the integration of youth and women into the heart of the agricultural value chain to ensure a resilient and equitable future for all African nations.

Central to his intervention was the showcase of Algeria’s own agricultural success story, which has seen the country achieve significant levels of self-sufficiency through bold structural reforms. By prioritizing the electrification of farmlands and the rapid development of Sahara agriculture powered by solar energy and precision irrigation Algeria has effectively stabilized food inflation and boosted national production. Minister Walid reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to “South-South” cooperation, offering to share specialized expertise in arid-land farming and water management with neighboring states.

Through the lens of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Algeria envisions a unified economic front where shared technology and streamlined trade finally turn Africa into a self-sustaining global breadbasket.
