Abdelmadjid Meskoud’s voice falls silent

The passing of iconic Algerian artist Abdelmadjid Meskoud marks the end of a remarkable artistic journey that helped shape the identity of Algerian popular music. After a long battle with illness, the beloved singer leaves behind a rich legacy filled with creativity, authenticity, and timeless melodies.

Widely regarded as one of the emblematic voices of Algerian chanson, Meskoud became especially known for his unforgettable hit “Ya Dzayer Ya El Asima,” released in 1989. The song achieved immense success and remains deeply rooted in the memory of generations of Algerians.

In a condolence message, the Office National des Droits d’Auteur et des Droits Voisins (ONDA) paid tribute to the late artist, describing him as “a great artistic figure” and one of Algeria’s creative treasures. The office praised his loyalty to his artistic and cultural identity, noting that his work enriched the heritage of Algerian popular music and will continue to inspire future generations.

ONDA Director General Samir Thaâlabi also extended his heartfelt condolences to Meskoud’s family, friends, and admirers, praying for mercy and eternal peace for the late artist.
