Algeria mourns loss of screen icon Kamel Zerara

The Algerian cultural world is in mourning today following the sudden passing of veteran stage and screen icon Kamel Zerara, who died of a heart attack in Algiers at the age of 59.
A cornerstone of the Batna Regional Theatre for over three decades, Zerara’s career spanned the golden era of Algerian drama and the modern rise of television comedy. From his early theater days in 1985 with classics like The Martyrs Return This Week to his recent work in the 2026 production El Rabaâ, he remained a constant, beloved presence in the hearts of viewers.
Whether he was commanding the stage at the National Theatre or bringing laughter to living rooms in hit series like Dakious & Makious and Djemaï Family, Zerara’s 35-year legacy is one of unwavering dedication to his craft. He wasn’t just a performer; he was a storyteller who bridged the gap between traditional theater and the digital age. As the curtain falls on a remarkable life, his body will be returned to his birthplace in Batna for a final farewell. Algeria has lost a true gentleman of the arts, but his decades of work ensure his voice will echo in our culture for generations to come.
