Algiers theatre scene set for a vibrant June

With summer slowly settling over Algiers, the National Algerian Theatre “Mahieddine Bachtarzi” is preparing to open its doors to a month shaped by creativity, nostalgia and the magic of the stage. Throughout June 2026, the iconic cultural institution will host a rich and colorful program blending children’s performances, serious theater productions, artistic tributes and musical evenings in a celebration of Algeria’s vibrant cultural spirit.

Special attention has been given to International Children’s Day, with a lively lineup designed to spark imagination and joy among young audiences. Plays such as “Harry, Fary and the Colors,” “Lost in the Net,” and “The Red Snowman” will bring stories and laughter to the stage, alongside the “Little Storyteller” workshop, where children will explore storytelling, theatrical expression and creative thinking under the inspiring slogan: “The creative child of today is the creator of tomorrow.”

The theater will also cater to lovers of deeper and more thought-provoking productions through performances including “Secretary for One Day,” the monodrama “Jessica’s Obsession,” and the acclaimed “Ayoub’s Funeral,” directed by Ahmed Rezzak.

Beyond the performances, June will carry a strong emotional and cultural dimension through tributes honoring Algerian theater pioneers. The institution will celebrate National Artist Day with a graduation and honoring ceremony for Bachtarzi Theatre workers, while Andalusian music concerts and the ballet performance “Dream on a Summer Evening” promise elegant artistic moments for audiences.

In a touching tribute to Algerian artistic memory, the theater has also dedicated the month to the late actress Keltoum, remembered as one of the most iconic women in Algerian cinema and theater history. Best known for her unforgettable role in “The Winds of the Aures,” Keltoum left behind a remarkable legacy spanning more than 70 theatrical productions and over 20 films, becoming in 1967 the first Arab woman to reach the Cannes Film Festival.
