Closing the loop on Eid sheep skin waste

As Algerians prepare to celebrate Eid al-Adha, authorities are once again turning a traditional ritual into an environmental and economic opportunity.

Through a nationwide campaign launched jointly by the ministries of Environment and Industry, citizens are being encouraged to preserve and hand over sheep skins instead of throwing them away  part of a broader strategy aimed at boosting recycling and promoting a circular economy.

Officials say the initiative goes far beyond waste collection. It is designed to reduce illegal dumping, improve public cleanliness and support local industries that rely on processed leather and recycled materials. Specialized collection systems, awareness campaigns and local coordination teams have already been mobilized across the country to ensure the smooth recovery and treatment of sacrificial skins during the Eid period.

Citizens are being advised to properly salt and dry the skins before delivering them to designated collection points, where they will later be sorted and processed by specialized teams. According to environmental officials, the operation reflects Algeria’s growing push to transform waste into economic value while protecting public health and the environment at the same time.
