Do Energy drinks improve concentration during exams?

Students currently passing the BEM may, without a doubt, be stressing before entering the exam room , which they have prepared for during the whole year. Outside the headquarters, we can notice a large number of students holding small cans of energy drinks, wishing and thinking they would boost their energy and give them more concentration to keep up during the exam, generally after the insomnia of the previous days. Yet, is it really the case?

Energy drinks are usually not a good idea, especially for students at that age, where the body and mind are naturally at their peak of energy and focus. With an explosive cocktail of high amounts of caffeine along with sugar, they can give the feeling of an extra boost that lasts only a short time. However, this is only a double-edged sword, as it also overstimulates the brain, leading to higher levels of anxiety and stress by increasing the heartbeat. After that, the brain faces trouble concentrating once the “crash” kicks in  in other words, after those few minutes of boost are gone.

This is why energy drinks are highly discouraged by experts, while healthier habits are strongly favored instead. Since exams require a calm brain to focus and think clearly rather than an overstimulated mind and a dizzy body, getting a good night’s sleep stands at the top of the list. Keeping up with nutritious food such as proteins, fish, bananas for breakfast, and some nuts as snacks can also go a long way in helping students stay focused and energized in a healthier manner.
