Ebola cases rise in Kampala as regional outbreak spreads

Uganda has confirmed two new Ebola infections in the capital, Kampala, raising the country’s total number of cases to nine since the outbreak linked to neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo began spreading earlier this month.

According to Uganda’s Health Ministry, both new patients are Congolese nationals and were quickly isolated after showing symptoms. Health authorities said contact tracing operations are ongoing as officials race to contain the virus.

The outbreak, caused by the deadly Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, has already claimed 246 lives in the DRC, where more than 1,000 suspected cases have been recorded, according to Africa CDC.

Despite growing concerns, the World Health Organization confirmed Friday the first recovery in the DRC outbreak, offering a rare sign of hope amid the escalating health crisis.
