Smart farming startups shine in Algiers

Algeria’s agricultural sector is seeing a new wave of innovation driven by young entrepreneurs and startups looking to modernize farming, improve food production, and create more sustainable economic opportunities.

At the closing ceremony of the 24th SIPSA Agriculture exhibition in Algiers on Thursday, seven innovative projects were awarded the “Africa SIPSA Innov Sid Ahmed Ferroukhi” prize, spotlighting ideas that combine technology with agriculture, food production, and fisheries.

The competition brought together nearly 100 startups working in agricultural technology, food innovation, and fishing technologies, reflecting the growing interest in transforming one of the country’s key economic sectors. Organizers selected 20 finalists, with seven projects ultimately receiving top honors, including six Algerian startups.

Among the winning projects was a modern aquaculture system designed to increase fish farming productivity through advanced equipment and technology. Other awarded initiatives focused on reducing carbon emissions in agricultural production and developing innovative methods for growing vegetables and aromatic herbs.

The event also highlighted the rising importance of quality local production, as several Algerian olive oil brands were recognized for excellence during the national competition for extra virgin olive oil, further underlining efforts to strengthen Algeria’s position in regional and international agricultural markets.
