Attaf receives UN envoy de mistura for Sahara talks review

Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held talks on Monday morning with Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, who is currently on a regional tour.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the meeting reviewed ongoing efforts to advance the UN-led negotiation process aimed at reaching a political solution acceptable to both parties the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front in line with UN principles and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.

Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the efforts of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his envoy, stressing the need for unconditional negotiations and the creation of the right conditions for direct talks that could lead to a just, lasting and final settlement of the conflict.

He also reiterated the importance of the MINURSO mission in maintaining regional stability, reaffirming Algeria’s consistent position in favor of international legality and treating the issue as a decolonization matter.
