Relizane turns Eid hides into industrial value

Relizane collected more than 22,800 sheep hides during Eid al-Adha as part of Algeria’s national campaign to recover and recycle livestock byproducts for industrial use.
Local industry officials said 22,843 hides were gathered across the region through a coordinated effort involving several public institutions, municipalities and the public textile group GETEX. More than 160 collection points were set up across Relizane’s 38 municipalities to facilitate the operation.
After sorting, around 19,500 hides representing 85 percent of the total collected were deemed suitable for tanning and industrial processing. These were transferred to a specialized facility in Aïn Témouchent, while hides intended for wool recovery were supplied to private operators in the province.
The campaign highlights growing efforts to integrate circular-economy practices into Algeria’s industrial sector by transforming what is often treated as waste into valuable raw materials for manufacturing. Officials also noted strong public participation, which played a key role in the operation’s success.
