Somali referee : From rejection to respect

The Somali referee who was set to participate in the World Cup faced a brutal rejection without any clear or reasonable explanation. Upon his arrival at Miami International Airport, Artan was detained by immigration authorities and questioned for 11 hours over alleged links to the terrorist group Al-Shabaab in his home country.

The referee denied any knowledge of such allegations, stressing that he had absolutely no connection to the organization or any similar activities. Despite possessing all the necessary visas and legal documents to enter the United States and take part in the tournament, he was ultimately sent back to his country.

This act of discrimination cost Antra the opportunity to officiate at the world’s biggest football competition. For the referee, it was a heartbreaking moment that saw his lifelong dream slip through his fingers. In an effort to ease the burden, FIFA decided to pay him the full salary he would have earned at the World Cup. The final amount will be determined after the tournament concludes, as referees typically do not know their exact compensation until the competition wraps up.

In addition, the Somali referee was welcomed home as a hero. A special reception was organized by both the public and government officials, reflecting the widespread support he received. Yet such recognition cannot erase the impact of the injustice he endured.

For many observers, the incident leaves a bitter taste and raises questions about fairness and equal treatment. It is, once again, a reminder of the controversies that have surrounded this World Cup and the dreams that have been shattered along the way.
