Sonatrach expands energy partnership in Niger

Algeria and Niger took a significant step toward strengthening regional energy cooperation on Tuesday, signing three new memorandums of understanding aimed at expanding oil, gas, and fuel distribution activities across Niger.

The agreements, signed between subsidiaries of Algeria’s state-owned energy giant Sonatrach and Niger’s national petroleum company SONIDEP, cover seismic exploration, drilling operations, and petroleum product distribution.

Among the key projects is the creation of joint ventures dedicated to oil and gas drilling and bitumen production, supporting both hydrocarbon development and infrastructure projects in Niger. The deals also include plans to build LPG filling centers and launch training programs focused on technology transfer and skills development.

The agreements reflect Algeria’s broader strategy of promoting South-South cooperation and expanding its energy footprint across Africa, while helping Niger strengthen its hydrocarbon sector and attract new investment. Officials from both countries described the partnership as a driver of economic integration, energy security, and long-term development.
