Toward boosting cancer research and early detection

Algeria is looking to deepen its cooperation with the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency as it pushes ahead with major health sector reforms and a long-term national cancer strategy.

During talks in Algiers, Health Minister Mohamed Seghir Aït Mesoudane and the head of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) discussed expanding clinical research, improving cancer registries, and strengthening early detection programs.

A key focus was Algeria’s planned rollout of HPV vaccination during 2026-2027, a move aimed at preventing cervical cancer. The two sides also explored Algeria’s potential membership in the IARC, which would open the door to greater scientific collaboration, expertise sharing, and support for young researchers.

The discussions reflect Algeria’s growing emphasis on prevention, digital health records, and research-driven healthcare as part of its 2025-2035 cancer control roadmap.
