ANIE praises transparency of July 2 legislative elections

Acting president of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) Karim Khelfane on Monday praised the transparency and integrity of Algeria’s July 2 legislative elections, while calling on political parties and civil society to work harder to regain voters’ trust.

Speaking at a press conference in Algiers to announce provisional results for the People’s National Assembly (APN), Khelfane said turnout reached 21.24% inside Algeria and 10.75% among Algerians living abroad. He described these figures as the “real turnout rate” and said they reflected a transparent electoral process.

Khelfane stressed that voting is not legally compulsory and that citizens must be convinced by political programs and grassroots engagement. He also said ANIE remained neutral throughout the process and allowed party observers to monitor voting centers and polling stations.

The July 2 vote was the ninth national election supervised by ANIE, which Khelfane said has helped the authority strengthen oversight, improve communication channels and address shortcomings in future electoral operations.
